The Ballari district committee of the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and the Public Library Readers Forum have urged the authorities to keep the Ballari Public Central Library open on holidays too to help students and job aspirants prepare for competitive examinations.In a memorandum submitted to the authorities, AIDYO district secretary Jagadeesh Nemakalu said that hundreds of people, including students and senior citizens, visit the library every day.A large number of job aspirants also depend on the library for their studies, particularly at a time when recruitment to government posts has resumed following several youth movements and agitations, he said.The organisation said that many job aspirants do not have a conducive atmosphere for studying at home and are, therefore, relying on public libraries.“However, the library remains closed on holidays, including on Mondays, the second Tuesday, the fourth Saturday and government holidays. This affected the continuity of studies and preparation for recruitment examinations,” Mr. Nemakalu said.The organisation pointed out that students who cannot use public libraries are forced to depend on private libraries which charge thousands of rupees every month. Such expenditure is difficult to bear for unemployed youth and job aspirants, it said.The AIDYO and the readers forum have urged the authorities to keep public libraries open even on holidays so that students and job aspirants can study without interruption.They also sought the installation of stone benches and a roofed facility outside the library where readers could sit and have their meals.AIDYO members Pramod E.H. and Siddu, students Rangaswamy, Hanumesh, Yuvaraj K., Shivashankar and Mohan were present.
