After a seemingly endless summer of scorching weather across Europe, the arrival of milder autumn temperatures won't come a moment too soon for some.And what better way to enjoy the cooler weather than with a stomp around a new city – and an affordable one at that.New research from travel agency Thomas Cook shows that 18 of Europe's 51 popular city-break destinations can be enjoyed for less than £100 per person, per day.Albania's quirky capital, Tirana, comes out on top: its offbeat architecture, lively café scene and stunning landscapes can be enjoyed for an average daily cost of just £51 this September.Indeed, the affordable destination can be explored for just £153 over a three-day long weekend – while an equivalent trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, would cost roughly £915, or £305 per person, per day. Despite Albania's fast-growing status as a popular tourist destination – bookings have increased by over 300 per cent in recent years – Tirana remains something of a hidden gem for travellers keen to explore new pastures on a budget.The average price of paid attractions comes in at under £4, and travellers will similarly be delighted by the reasonable price of eating out.A hearty helping of Albania's national dish, tave kosi (baked rice and lamb in a tangy yoghurt sauce), costs around £7 – and enjoyed with a Birra Korça, the country's iconic beer, for only £1.31.The city also offers a range of excellent accommodation options, with the average cost a night sitting at approximately £27.50 per person for stays in early September. Hearty plates of the national dish, baked rice and lamb (pictured) can be had for just £7, washed down with a beer for only £1.31Fellow Eastern European city, Bucharest, was awarded second place in the rankings, with an average daily cost of just £57 per person.As with Tirana, Bucharest is similarly enjoying something of a tourism boom.Nicknamed 'Little Paris' on account of the French influence on its architecture – of which the Central Library and Romanian Athenaeum are great examples – this bijou city offers a £1.32 daily bus pass for tourists to enjoy hassle-free travel.Eating out is also affordable here: dinner comes in at around £10 on average, while a quick mid-sightseeing lunch can be had for under £6.Over in Turkey, coastal city Antalya came in as the third most affordable for travellers this autumn, with an average daily cost of £67 per person.The Turkish delight also boasts the lowest cost of eating out in the whole study; both fast-food lunches and dinners out can be found for around £7.While paid-for attractions in Antalya are slightly more expensive than others on the list (at an average of £16.45), alternative attractions such as the Old Town, Hadrian's Gate and Kaleiçi can be enjoyed completely free – and are a fantastic way to immerse oneself in the city's rich culture and lively atmosphere.
