(123rf) A bride-to-be who was set to marry at a wedding hall on Sogang University’s campus next month was told Aug. 23 that the venue had abruptly shut down after a court-ordered enforcement action, leaving her and other couples scrambling to find alternatives.The woman had been scheduled to hold her wedding Sept. 12 at the Gonzaga Convention space, but the venue told her that it could no longer operate. Interior decorations and the wedding aisle were removed the following day.The closure stemmed from a prolonged dispute between Gonzaga Convention and the company managing the building, according to local media reports.The wedding hall reportedly accumulated losses after the university campus was largely closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and fell behind on rent payments. The building’s management company later pursued compulsory enforcement, eventually forcing the venue to close.Despite the dispute, Gonzaga Convention continued to accept wedding reservations.Citing the management company, the bride-to-be told Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday that the venue had been told as early as December 2025 to stop taking new bookings because of the possibility of enforcement, but continued to accept business.Gonzaga Convention, however, reportedly said it had repeatedly sought talks with the management company as its financial difficulties persisted after the pandemic, but that the company refused negotiations and instead pursued enforcement.“We filed for a suspension of enforcement and also filed a lawsuit in an effort to prevent the compulsory enforcement,” the operator said.The abrupt closure has left couples facing not only changes to their wedding dates and venues, but also potential cancellation fees for related services, including wedding dresses and makeup.The operator said it would refund deposits and compensate customers for damages “within the scope permitted by law.”Other couples have also reported being affected. A public KakaoTalk chat room created to coordinate a response and seek compensation had 32 participants, most of them Sogang University alumni.
