Yayoi Kusama: Japanese art icon behind the infinity rooms dies at 97 [Courtesy]
Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist who transformed polka dots, pumpkins and mirrored rooms into one of contemporary art's most recognisable visual languages, has died aged 97.
Kusama died at a hospital in Tokyo on August 14, according to a statement posted by Yayoi Kusama Inc. and Yayoi Kusama Studio Inc. on Thursday.
“Throughout an extraordinary lifetime devoted entirely to artistic creation, Kusama pursued an internationally acclaimed career as a pioneering avant-garde artist whose creative practice encompassed visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry,” the statement said.
Kusama moved to the United States in 1957, where she developed her celebrated “Infinity Net” paintings, soft sculptures and mirror-and-light installations, laying the foundation for the distinctive artistic world that would later make her internationally famous.
