METLEN is strengthening the position of its Energy sector in battery energy storage systems (BESS), advancing major projects and milestones in the United Kingdom, Italy and Greece and expanding its presence in large-scale energy storage infrastructure for the power grid.In the UK, METLEN recently signed a Balance of Plant (BoP) contract with Pulse Clean Energy for the flagship Penn BESS project, a 129 MW facility in the West Midlands with 362 MWh of battery storage capacity. It is the largest energy storage project the company has undertaken in the country in terms of storage capacity.Pulse Clean Energy is a rapidly growing UK developer and operator of battery energy storage systems, with an expanding portfolio of projects supporting the decarbonization of the power system and enabling greater integration of renewable energy generation. The company has one of the UK’s largest battery storage portfolios, with 400 MWh of capacity, while a further 400 MWh is under construction, with a target of reaching 2 GWh by 2030.METLEN’s scope of work on the project also includes grid connection works, another critical component in integrating renewable energy. The facility is expected to be energized by the end of 2027.According to METLEN, the project further strengthens the company’s track record in delivering battery energy storage projects across the UK as the country’s energy landscape evolves. Overall, METLEN has completed or is currently implementing around 30 battery storage facilities in the UK, including hybrid projects and solar-plus-storage projects, with total capacity of nearly 2 GWh, in partnership with leading companies.€18 million long-term financing secured for 25 MW/75 MWh BESS project in ItalyIn Italy, METLEN secured €18 million in long-term financing for a 25 MW/75 MWh BESS project in Apulia, in the province of Brindisi. The project became fully operational during the year and is backed by a seven-year Physical Tolling Agreement with Dolomiti Energia Group.The long-term financing agreement is one of the first of its kind in Italy’s energy storage market and reflects an advanced commercial model already established at the European level.METLEN has operated in the Italian market since 2017, steadily expanding its presence across the country. Today, the company has a diversified portfolio in Italy, including around 3 GWh of energy storage capacity.Large-scale energy storage projects in GreeceIn Greece, in partnership with Karatzis Group, METLEN has developed the country’s largest standalone battery energy storage facility planned to date and one of the largest in Europe. The project, located in Thessaly, has a capacity of 330 MW and 790 MWh of installed battery storage.The facility’s capacity has now been integrated into the national electricity transmission system, marking a significant step toward full operation and participation in grid services.Meanwhile, a 48 MW/96 MWh battery energy storage project in Polygyros, Halkidiki, in Central Macedonia, was recently completed. The Aenaos project was developed under Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Greece 2.0, with funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program.The projects reflect METLEN’s approach of treating battery energy storage not as a complementary technology but as a critical catalyst for the energy transition. The company said BESS supports the integration of renewable energy, provides flexibility and grid-stabilization services, strengthens energy security, reduces renewable energy curtailment and contributes to a more resilient and reliable power system.
