WhatsApp has announced new measures to enhance account security for users. The Messenger service from Meta wants to tighten two-factor authentication and provide more context for unknown callers in the future. Also new is that multiple passkeys per account are now possible.
According to WhatsApp, the password alternative Passkey is very popular. Over a billion users have already set one up. A passkey is a cryptographic login method that replaces traditional passwords or SMS codes. Instead of a password that you have to remember or enter, you confirm your identity locally on the device via fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock code.
Multiple passkeys per account
Multiple passkeys per account are now possible with WhatsApp. This is interesting for users who use Android and iOS devices in parallel. These platforms cannot share a common key. Within a platform, one key is usually sufficient. Setup is done via the app’s settings and then under the Account menu item for Passkeys.
WhatsApp is also increasing complexity with two-factor authentication. The previous six-digit numeric PINs will be replaced by alphanumeric passwords with special characters, WhatsApp announces in its blog post. The goal is better protection against account takeover – even if attackers are in possession of the one-time password. WhatsApp advises users who use weak PINs like 123456 for convenience to change them quickly.
