The microblogging service X may have definitively brought down Nitter, a popular service that allowed users to view content on the platform without having an account there. This is stated in a notice on the website nitter.net, which says that development has been halted for now and the service will remain offline. The developer in charge is reportedly seeking legal counsel and will not comment further on the matter. According to TechCrunch, Nitter is accused of violating several US federal and state laws and has been ordered to shut down by August 25, 5 PM local time.
Not the first shutdown
Nitter has been around since 2019, initially aiming to provide access to Twitter content while retaining the popular but then-abolished old user interface. After Twitter was taken over by Elon Musk and later became X, the service also served as a point of contact for those who no longer wanted to maintain an account there but did not want or could not do without content from certain accounts. In early 2024, the service was temporarily shut down after a function essential for its operation was removed from Twitter. In early February 2025, Nitter was brought back online, but after a year and a half, it may now be definitively over.
