Doctors of MGM Cancer Institute used a vacuum-assisted technique to remove a breast lump in a 33-year-old woman.According to a press release, the woman was diagnosed with breast fibroadenoma. She had two benign masses in the same breast. One mass was located near the areolar region, while the other was in the middle portion of the breast.Two different approaches were adopted considering the location of the masses. Doctors opted for open surgery for the one near the areolar region as some overlying skin along with a margin of normal tissue had to be removed, and ultra-sound guided Vacuum Assisted Excision (VAE) for the other mass. The minimally invasive VAE uses suction to remove certain breast lumps, avoiding scars, sutures, and breast distortion, the release saidM.A. Raja, director and senior consultant, Medical Oncology, said that VAE is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used for removing very small lumps. This approach serves in both diagnosis and treatment. However, it would not apply to all kinds of lumps and depends on the size and position of the mass.Kirti Katherine Kabeer, consultant, Breast Oncology, who led the surgical team, said VAE leaves no scar and requires no sutures, which is particularly important for young women.“We have done VAE a few times in young unmarried girls. In this case, we confirmed that the mass was non-cancerous,” she said, adding that on follow-up, any change in shape or growth was monitored. VAE can be done as a daycare procedure and the patient can continue their routine post-procedure.Doctors stressed on screening to pick up small breast lumps early.
