OWINGS MILLS, Md. — For Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, Wednesday’s joint practice with the Washington Commanders at the Under Armour Performance Center got off to a rocky start.Jackson and wide receiver Rashod Bateman had a miscommunication that resulted in an incompletion on the first play of the seven-on-seven red zone session. On the next play, Jackson overthrew an open Justice Hill in the end zone.Then, the next four Jackson throws went: short completion to tight end Mark Andrews, touchdown pass to Bateman, touchdown to Andrews and touchdown to rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane.There are still moments in just about every practice where it’s obvious that the Ravens are still experiencing some growing pains while learning Declan Doyle’s new offense. That’s to be expected with the Ravens still 2.5 weeks from their regular-season opener in Indianapolis.The Ravens are already going to plan B at centerJeff ZrebiecYet there are also flashes suggesting the Ravens will be just fine offensively. Wednesday’s biggest one from a solid, yet still a bit uneven practice was delivered by third-year wide receiver Devontez Walker, who caught a deep pass across the middle from Jackson and raced to the end zone.After practice, Jackson pronounced the Ravens as ready for the regular season. They’ll have one more dress rehearsal Friday in the preseason finale against the Commanders, but most of the starters will not play in the game.“I feel like my guys progressed each and every week,” Jackson said. “We got better, dialing in and building chemistry. I feel like we’re in a great place with the offense right now.”Jackson and other key Ravens offensive players continue to talk glowingly about the future of the Doyle-led offense. Last week, in particular, a blitz-happy Minnesota Vikings defense made things difficult for the Ravens’ offense during joint practices. There has also been an acknowledgment that the Ravens are going to be a work in progress as they gain more familiarity and comfort with the new offensive schemes.“There has been such a big growth throughout the last couple weeks, and for us, it is no one doing too much, just doing your job,” Andrews said. “I think we have slowly been working at that, and when we do that, good things happen. We are going to continue to stress that and communicate and do the details.”The Ravens have kept things pretty vanilla offensively this summer, but it’s clear the pre-snap process has been a focus. Running back Derrick Henry is going to be heavily involved in everything the Ravens do. Wide receivers Zay Flowers and Bateman have both talked about moving around and being used in different ways. A few of the tight ends will have prominent roles.Whether Jackson runs more or less — he had 67 rushes last year, a career low by a wide margin — is a curiosity Jackson was asked about Wednesday. He offered the reminder that he was “hurt” last year and he’ll do whatever it takes to win.That’s probably been the biggest takeaway offensively for Baltimore this summer. Jackson appears fully bought in and excited about the offense’s potential.“I think Lamar has done a great job,” Ravens coach Jesse Minter said. “It started, obviously, all the way back in the spring. I think he really enjoys the offensive coaches, the offensive system and what they are trying to do. He understands it all. He kind of sees the vision and sees what it can be.“Now it is just a daily process, daily work to get the reps that you need to get the plays in, get comfortable with all the different things that we are asking him to do, and I think he has done an unbelievable job. I am looking forward to seeing that in live action here soon.”Other news, notes• Bateman probably had his best day of training camp. He had his way with Mike Sainristil on his first one-on-one rep, and then he beat Amik Robertson relatively easily on his next two reps. Bateman also was extremely active in the full-team session and frequently found space in the secondary.• Lane, whose hands Jackson compared to Odell Beckham Jr. and DeAndre Hopkins, struggled to make a contested catch in the one-on-one session, but he made a nifty snag of a Jackson pass while crossing the field in full-team action.• Kicker Tyler Loop was not as sharp as he was in Minnesota last week, going 5-for-7 in the team session Wednesday. He converted from 38, 37, 45, 49 and 53 yards. His misses, from 41 and 66, were both wide right.• Both teams were on their best behavior, with the closest thing to an altercation coming when Ravens cornerback Amani Oruwariye and Commanders safety Qwuantrezz Knight locked up in a special teams drill. No punches were thrown, and Oruwariye and Knight were separated quickly. Wednesday’s joint practice didn’t seem to reach the intensity of the two workouts with the Vikings last week.• The Ravens signed inside linebacker Michael Barrett, adding another body for the preseason finale at a position where they are very thin. Projected starters Roquan Smith and Trenton Simpson won’t play Friday, nor will Teddye Buchanan, who is still just doing individual work after being activated from the physically unable to perform list last week. Jamon Johnson hasn’t practiced since hurting his thumb in the second preseason game. Carl Jones has been sidelined since very early in camp, and Reid Williford has missed recent practices with an undisclosed injury. It’s possible that Barrett, Jay Higgins IV and Dominic DeLuca are the only inside linebackers in uniform Friday.• To create a roster spot for Barrett, center Danny Pinter was placed on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday with the knee injury he suffered last week. Jovaughn Gwyn continues to get the chance at center with the starters, but Ethan Pocic had an impressive moment Wednesday when he pancaked defensive tackle Byron Cowart to the ground. Pocic immediately started clapping, and Ravens offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford rushed over to celebrate with him.• Doyle sent Lucas Scott to the sideline after the fullback/tight end was responsible for the second of back-to-back Ravens pre-snap penalties.• Minter said Flowers, outside linebacker Zion Young and cornerback Bilhal Kone were dealing with minor injuries. Flowers and Young worked on an adjacent field. Minter acknowledged that it will probably be tough to get Kone, who is believed to be on the roster bubble, healthy in time for Friday’s game.
