National Black Farmers Association President John Boyd ripped the Trump administration on Wednesday over recent policies devastating the agriculture industry, which he says are “insulting to America’s farmers.” “This is not what American farmers need right now when we are struggling. We’re struggling with the president’s tariffs. We’re struggling with the high input costs from fuel and diesel and fertilizer from the war in Iran. So it’s a rippling effect,” Boyd said on CNN. President Donald Trump received massive backlash from Republicans and Democrats in recent days over his administration’s effort to lower consumer prices by temporarily lifting tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef. The president states that the imported beef, the source of which he has not publicly disclosed, will be sold at 25% below current market prices.However, according to Boyd, the proposal “is a national insult to America’s producers and cattlemen.”United States Cattlemen’s Association President Justin Tupper also warned that Trump’s policy will actually hurt many U.S. cattlemen, “weaken our markets and gamble with food safety in the process.”Trump’s announcement rings similar to his October proposal to import beef from Argentina. Earlier this month, nearly 30,000 pounds of beef imported from Argentina was recalled due to a missed inspection. Boyd questioned, “Why are we being forced to take this beef?”“It’s the right solution for himself, it’s what it sounds like, and those are many of the deals that the president does. There’s always something in it for himself and the administration,” Boyd said of Trump’s recent policy. “None of the cattlemen, like myself, was notified about this deal.”He also went on to bash Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins for failing to address cattlemen after the announcement. “Who’s ever seen an agriculture secretary that says that there’s a beef deal, 300,000 metric tons, and they can’t even tell you where the beef is coming from? You know, it just doesn’t — as my kids say, the math isn’t mathing,” Boyd said. “And for many of the white farmers who voted for this president three times fold — you know, it’s time to look at a different direction in this country for agriculture, because the president has just taken so many farmers out of business.”
