KING Charles III is set to visit Guyana in October as part of a royal tour of the Caribbean and surrounding region, with the visit marking 60 years of bilateral relations between Guyana and the United Kingdom.The Guyanese Government announced on Wednesday that the King had accepted an invitation from President Irfaan Ali, alongside a request from the UK Government, to make a state visit to Guyana in the latter part of October.Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla will undertake an Autumn Tour from October 27 to November 4, including visits to The Bahamas, Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda. The King will travel to Guyana for a state visit, while the King and Queen will later travel to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.The Guyana visit is expected to highlight the longstanding relationship between the two countries and comes as bilateral ties have expanded in areas including trade, investment, climate action, development and people-to-people relations.Guyana became independent from Britain in 1966 and subsequently became a republic in 1970.The relationship has also developed an increasingly important economic dimension. According to the Guyanese Government, bilateral trade between Guyana and the UK increased from £587 million in 2020 to £1.64 billion in 2024, while UK Export Finance has increased its support for opportunities in Guyana.President Ali has maintained regular engagement with the UK and the British royal family. He attended King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey in May 2023, while in September 2024 he met the King in Scotland for discussions focused on climate resilience, sustainable development, agriculture and community-driven initiatives.The Guyanese Government said the upcoming visit would provide an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations while showcasing the country’s development, cultural heritage and growing international role.The royal tour will begin in The Bahamas on October 27, before King Charles travels to Guyana. He and Queen Camilla will then visit Antigua and Barbuda, where they will attend CHOGM 2026 from November 1 to 4.
