The Railway Ministry has announced Chennai as one among the seven high-density routes connecting the country’s biggest cities. In a press release, Southern Railway said that out of the seven high-density routes identified, three routes originate from Chennai including the Howrah – Chennai, Chennai – Mumbai and Delhi - Chennai. The other four routes are: Delhi–Howrah, Mumbai–Delhi, Mumbai–Howrah and Delhi–Guwahati. The press release stated that as per the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Railways is moving towards four-laning the entire high-density network to increase capacity and support the growing movement of passengers and freight across the country.
