The Albanese government has cut Australia’s annual refugee intake by a third, unwinding a series of increases made in recent years and contravening a policy pledge to the Labor rank-and-file a decade ago.
The government will reduce the current annual refugee quota next financial year from 20,000 to the long-run base figure of 13,750. The reduction is not part of the immigration curbs currently being considered by cabinet, but it will still help the government achieve its stated aim of cutting net overseas migration.
