The eagle has landed, so to speak.At lunchtime today, the wheels of a private jet (naturally) carrying the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their two children touched down from California, to the slightly less glamorous Birmingham Airport, for the start of a grand old adventure.Unlike the fanfare afforded to the couple in years gone by, there was no royal protection to greet them off the plane, and no hint of a security convoy to escort them home - wherever that may be.For a couple who have gone to great lengths to leave Britain behind six years ago on the ludicrously self-titled ‘Freedom Flight’ in 2020, there has been no shortage of information seeping out regarding their grand plans for a return to Blighty.‌However, much is still unknown as to why on earth they have chosen to come back to a country Prince Harry, just last year said, he could not see a day when he felt it safe enough to bring his wife and children back to. And yet here they are.I am told the Sussexes informed the Home Office, who is still mulling over Harry’s right to taxpayer funded security despite him being told in court twice to give up the ghost, of his intention to return ahead of his family -including his father, who you have forgotten in this multi-series soap opera is the actual King.This trip, it is worth considering, is no fleeting visit for charity or commemoration purposes. Of course the carefully choreographed public engagements will come, sooner rather than later I understand, but for something potentially far more significant.‌Harry, Meghan and their children, Archie and Lilibet, on an “extended stay”, according to sources close to the couple. The children, seven and five, are enrolled in school and the family will base themselves, reportedly at least, within the bosom of the Cotswolds set.Yet, they are not disposing of homes in Montecito or Portugal, with the family expected to establish themselves in a private home rather for “six months, a year, two years… who knows”, according to other sources. Call Kirsty and Phil at once, this episode of Location, Location, Location is going to be a pearler.It is telling that Buckingham Palace chose the same day as the Sussexes’ arrival to announce the King and Queen’s plans for a mega royal tour in the autumn - nine weeks from now. Coincidence? I think not.‌The message has been heard loud and clear. Just as the Prince and Princess of Wales ’ camp were last week keen to suggest William and Catherine “want no part in the drama”, the royals are trying their best to get on with the job without their new noisy neighbours.Harry’s diary for the foreseeable looks straightforward at least. There will be visits to the charities he has kept solid ties with, including WellChild, Scotty’s Little Soldiers and the Invictus community. Meghan’s role is rather less straightforward.Of course there has been much discussion about a potential return to acting - certainly no “backlash” from what I can see which would jeopardise such a comeback. Indeed it might lessen the burden of any talk of returning of working royals, which let’s face it, would not work for either party.‌But, six years on from the infamous Sandringham Summit in January 2020, which set out the rules of engagement for Harry and Meghan for their new found “freedom”, that agreement remains the elephant in the room.Does proximity change everything or nothing?For King Charles, this could be both an opportunity and an enormous emotional complication. Having his grandchildren nearby will undoubtedly be precious.But for the Prince and Princess of Wales, the picture is likely to be considerably more complicated. The brothers remain estranged, and the Sussexes' physical return inevitably puts all relationships under an increasing spotlight.‌There will be questions about family gatherings, Christmas, birthdays, Balmoral and Sandringham. There will be speculation over whether Harry and Meghan are invited, whether they decline and whether any apparent reconciliation is genuine.Most importantly, there will be the question of boundaries and who is willing to bend - or test them - to create a new future.
