Britain weighs settlement-trade ban as Israel advances E1 construction plans: UK media
LONDON: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to announce within weeks a broad ban on trade in goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, British media reported on Wednesday.
According to The Telegraph, Burnham is considering a full embargo on settlement goods in response to Israel’s planned construction in the contentious E1 area, a corridor between East Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement.
The measures would reportedly signal a tougher approach toward Israel than that of Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer, and could further strain already frayed relations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
The development of E1 has long drawn international criticism because it could further fragment Palestinian territory in the West Bank.
