Oscar winner Marisa Tomei and Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler form a mother-and-daughter bond in the first look image from upcoming comedy drama “She Gets It From Me.”
The film — which wrapped production in New York in July and is currently in post-production — comes from director Julia von Heinz (“Treasure,” “And Tomorrow the Entire World”) and was written by Jay Reiss (“The Oranges,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”), with Ed Helms (“The Office,” “The Hangover” trilogy) and Nat Wolff (“Paper Towns,” “Play Dirty”) also starring. Embankment Films is handling global sales, with CAA representing North America.
First announced last year, “She Gets It From Me” sees Zegler and Tomei play a daughter and birth mother reunited after a lifetime apart, feeling their way through the “awkward, funny, wild and deeply moving process of becoming part of each other’s lives.” The story follows Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mom, Charlotte (Tomei). Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect.
“Playing Nicky was an unforgettable experience – she’s messy, vulnerable, funny, and full of heart,” said Zegler, fresh off her Olivier award win for “Evita” and the announcement of the production’s broadway run in 2027. “Working opposite Marisa was both a gift and a masterclass, and Julia created such a fearless, compassionate space for us to tell this story.”
