It operates across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia, mailing free, age-appropriate books once a month to children up to 5 years old, regardless of family income. The Dollywood Foundation was established in 1988 and originally focused on reducing school dropout rates in her home county of Sevier County. Her success with decreasing dropout rates through the Buddy Program, which awarded $500 to seventh and eighth graders who finished high school, earned her the National Education Association’s highest honor in 2022. Over the following decades Parton’s philanthropic work expanded. Dollywood’s Eagle Mountain Sanctuary works with the American Eagle Foundation to shelter and preserve bald eagles. In 2000, she established the Dolly Parton Scholarship, which gives $15,000 to five high school seniors from Sevier County who wish to go to college. In 2016, she organized and headlined a telethon for victims of the East Tennessee wildfires that devastated her home region, raising funds for displaced families.
