Plug-in solar panels can be fitted to balconies, walls and gardens, but safe installation depends on the right location, permissions and connection method.

With plug-in solar panels hitting UK retailers from 27 August, many households will have a simpler way to generate their own electricity, without the cost and commitment of a full rooftop solar installation. Rather than having large panels fixed to the roof and wired into the home by an installer, these smaller systems can be mounted on a balcony, wall, terrace or garden frame and connected to the property through an approved plug-in setup.
The technology could make solar power more accessible to homes where installing panels aren’t realistic, including renters, flat owners and homeowners whose roofs aren't suitable for conventional panels. And you may even be able to purchase them at your local supermarket.
