From September, France will ban phones in lycées (high school), after previously banning them in schools for younger children - here's how the legislation works in practice.
“The ban on mobile phones in lycées can take effect from the start of the new school year, with a stable, consolidated and statutory legal framework,” government spokesperson Maud Bregeon told reporters on Monday.
The measure had been part of a bill that aimed to ban social media for all under 15s - however the country's constitutional council struck that down, saying that it was unconstitutional.
The lycée phones ban was allowed to stand however. Similar legislation has been in place for primary schools (for children aged three to 11) and collège (11 to 15) since 2018.
It covers all 'connected devices' – tablets and smartwatches, for example –as well as phones.
