• Villages devastated: A huge flash flood has swept through villages in Nepal. Police say at least 17 people have been killed but there are fears the toll will rise. Nepal’s tourism board says at least 400 travelers, including foreign nationals, are missing.
• Tibet hit: Tibet has also been impacted, with Chinese state media warning of “major casualties.” A mudslide also hit China’s Gyirong port, where Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged “all-out” search efforts.
• Rescue operation: Nepal’s foreign minister said an earthquake triggered a large landslide, which in turn blocked a river, sending a torrent of water downstream. Helicopters are searching the area but waters in some parts are too high for them to land, Nepali authorities say.
People have clambered into helicopters from roof terraces and been winched up from the mud left behind by the floodwater, videos posted by the Nepali Army show.
Some of those rescued are covered in mud and appear injured after being battered by the flood, one video shows.
