There are 138 teams now playing major college football. So who truly has hopes of winning the national championship?The expansion of the College Football Playoff to 12 teams and the ascent of Indiana — the first first-time champion since 1996 Florida — may give many more teams hope, but there’s still likely a finite number of teams that can realistically win it all.Austin Mock’s College Football Projection Model takes into account play-by-play level data, adjusts for opponents and uses recruiting and transfer portal data to formulate a power rating for every team. From there, the model can simulate every game, select the teams for the Playoff and simulate that too. Do that 100,000 times, and you get a pretty good prediction for how the college football season is going to play out.With our College Football Playoff Predictor now live and ready to update throughout the season, Mock and college football roster expert Sam Khan Jr. are here to break down the initial odds and offer their takes on who can win it all:How many teams have a real chance at winning the national championship?Mock: I’ll go with 14: Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Oregon, Indiana, Miami, Texas, Tech Tech, Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and USC. I landed there at every team that had a greater than 1.5 percent chance to win the national championship in my model. You could talk me into 16 because the next two teams that were left out were Michigan and Penn State, and I guess I could see it happening, but that’s as far as I’m willing to go. I’m not sure if there is a Curt Cignetti-level coach outside of that range that has the talent level to exceed expectations by that much.Khan: Indiana has shown us that anything is possible, but if we’re talking teams that can actually win three or four Playoff games, it’s roughly half that number. If we’re picking the national champion today, I think it comes from this group of seven that are all above 6 percent in the model: Georgia, Indiana, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon and Texas. But if we think having a “real chance” means getting to the semifinals and rolling the dice that anything can happen from there, then the list grows a bit, to roughly a dozen in my mind.
