I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found rugs to be one of the most puzzling components of interior design. Is it big enough? Is it too big? Should I get a solid color or go with a pattern? But leave it Target — purveyor of, among other things, home goods that are simultaneously (and surprisingly) very attractive and very well-priced — to provide a solution: The Melrose checkered area rug from nuLoom.Made in India of 100% hand-tufted wool with a cushy-but-not-too-thick ¼ inch pile, it’s available in rectangle, round, square, and runner shapes, and in sizes up to 12 feet x 15 feet. It also comes in eight different, relatively neutral color schemes — brown, charcoal, chestnut (a maroon-y red), dark gray, light gray, moss (olive green), cream, and green (off-white with a green grid pattern) — so you’re bound to find at least one that blends seamlessly with your decor. NuLoom describes the Melrose as having a “farmhouse” look, but to my eye it’s truly universal. The checkered design has thin lines that stand out just enough from the base color, and the overall effect could work for aesthetics from midcentury modern to Scandinavian to industrial minimalist to whatever you call your personal style.Not only are these these prices shockingly low for any quality rug, they’re an exceptionally good deal for one whose look rivals that of much pricier models (we’re looking at you, Nordic Knots).TargetThe rug comes in a variety of versatile colors.I’m not the only one who’s taken a liking to the Melrose — 75 percent of customers rate it at least 4 stars, with nearly 400 (the vast majority of reviewers) giving it a perfect score.
