SpaceX is planning to invest up to $100 billion to build a massive new Starship launch complex in southern Louisiana — one of the most ambitious expansions yet of Elon Musk’s space business.
The company announced the plans unveiling what it calls Starbase Louisiana, a 125,000-acre facility on Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish and it is expected to become SpaceX’s largest launch site.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029. SpaceX said the facility will ultimately be capable of supporting thousands of Starship flights each year.
The project would expand SpaceX’s Starship operations beyond its existing facility in South Texas and planned operations in Florida, thereby giving the company additional infrastructure to improve the development and deployment of its next-generation reusable rocket.
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer said the Louisiana facility is designed as a largely self-sustaining spaceport, with plans for propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing facilities and an airport.
