In my first dynasty column for The Athletic this preseason, I laid out the distinctive features of the dynasty economy and the archetypes of players that different dynasty teams should target to better their outlook for the present, the future or both.If you read that piece, you know I don’t view players in a uniform fashion. A player who is an excellent target for a low-value team may be a poor one for a high-value team; and a player I’d recommend buying on a contender I might recommend selling on a rebuilder. Dynasty is such a fun format specifically because so many different players can make sense for different teams.I’m also a big believer that leagues are ordered by both a local and global economy. What I mean by that is that while dynasty managers may be more or less aware of universal ADP or trade value, each league also has its own unspoken tendencies and history, as well as its own specific roster or scoring settings which make universal valuations inapplicable.If you’re playing in a 2-TE league, or a full-point TE-Premium league, you can throw out whatever the typical value is for the TE position. If you’re playing in a league with your mates from home, for whom this is their only dynasty league, I’m going to guess that running backs and proven producers are probably valued above ADP. If you’re playing with a league full of people you found on dynasty Twitter or a Reddit forum, it’s reasonable to estimate the market will skew toward younger or trendier players. If you’re playing in a league with Thinking About Thinking subscribers, the economy will probably skew toward my rankings!For all these reasons, I typically refrain from labeling players as universal buys or sells. Rather, I set up my rankings in tiers measured by “base pick value.” From there, I typically encourage my readers to determine whether a player is a “buy” or a “sell” based on my valuation of the player relative to the global market, the local market of their league, and the manager’s team situation. All of this makes my job today — which is to write a column on dynasty sells — rather difficult!Nevertheless, we shall move forward. In keeping with my last column, I’ve organized this list to include my top universal sell candidate, as well as four sells organized by the type of team I think should be most inclined to move off them.To make life a little harder, I tried to think of players who could reasonably appear on each type of team. For instance, it’s very unlikely a rebuilding team currently rosters Davante Adams, and they should clearly be selling him if they do.
