US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in a post on Tuesday, August 25, that recent statements by Islamic Republic officials demonstrate that Washington’s economic pressure on Tehran is “taking effect.”
Writing on X, Bessent noted: “Iran’s leadership is acknowledging what the world can now see: the pressure is working.”
The Treasury Secretary pointed to recent remarks by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the necessity of ending the war, stating that Pezeshkian’s comments “acknowledged the country’s economic shortfalls.”
He also cited statements by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, noting that Ghalibaf spoke even more directly about Iran’s economic condition. Referring to Ghalibaf’s warnings regarding the consequences of public hunger, lack of liquidity, economic growth, and domestic production, Bessent characterised these admissions as further proof of the efficacy of US economic pressure.
Bessent emphasized that under President Donald Trump’s administration, the Treasury Department will continue severing “every economic lifeline” sustaining the Islamic Republic until Tehran “stands completely alone.”
