In a significant development, Nexon Geochem has completed the first round of technical evaluations and benchmarking of Indian-origin raw materials for producing Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) rare-earth permanent magnets, leveraging the technology of Russia’s State Research and Design Institute of Rare Metal Industry (Giredmet).As an immediate objective, the advanced materials company plans to establish a highly scalable sintered NdFeB permanent magnet manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, positioning itself as one of the first integrated rare earth oxide-to-magnet platforms. It is targeting a production capacity of 1,200 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) for NdFeB permanent magnets by FY33.Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) rare-earth permanent magnets are key intermediate components of permanent magnet synchronous (direct-drive) generators in wind turbines (especially offshore turbines) and electric synchronous traction motors for propulsion systems in battery and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).Technology pathway validated using Indian raw materialsPraveen Choudhary, Founder of Nexon Geochem, explained that this is a critical accomplishment for Nexon, as it has now technically validated the pathway to integrating Indian-origin raw materials into the required technology platform.“Our focus now is to take this validated route into pilot production and customer applications in India. Ultimately, we want to demonstrate that Indian-origin feedstock can support the production of customer-relevant, high-performance Nd-Fe-B magnets across the N35–N52 grade range, with applications spanning electric mobility, automotive, consumer electricals and electronics, renewable energy, medical technology, aerospace and defence and other advanced applications,” he told businessline.Konstantin Ivanovskikh, Deputy Director for Research & Innovation at Giredmet, said, “Nexon Geochem has crossed a critical technical threshold: Indian-origin raw materials have been successfully validated through the Nd-Fe-B manufacturing process using Giredmet’s technology. This establishes the foundation for Nexon to build an integrated Indian supply chain for high-performance permanent magnets, from domestic feedstock to finished Nd-Fe-B magnets.”Nexon targets pilot production and customer validationNexon plans to mobilise its offshore pilot for customer validation in India, work with customers on application-specific requirements, optimise the manufacturing process and product grades, and simultaneously advance the infrastructure, equipment and execution required for commercial-scale production.The technical validation marks an important step in the technology transfer agreement between Nexon and Giredmet, as the programme progresses towards its next stage. With decades of experience in rare-earth materials and Nd-Fe-B magnet technology, Giredmet has been supporting the benchmarking and qualification of Indian-origin material within the Nd-Fe-B manufacturing process.Evaluation covered raw materials and magnet performanceAs part of the programme, Nexon supplied Indian-origin Nd-Pr oxide, iron and ferroboron to Giredmet for technical evaluation. The objective was to validate the successful integration of these raw materials into the Russian Nd-Fe-B manufacturing technology platform and demonstrate their conversion into magnets that meet the required magnetic and structural performance parameters.The first batch has completed the prescribed technical evaluation and benchmarking. The evaluation covered the chemical composition and impurity profile of the raw materials, conversion of Nd-Pr oxide into Nd-Pr metal, material quality and microstructure and the performance of the resulting magnets. Key magnetic parameters under evaluation include BHmax, Hcj and Br, which define the strength, resistance, and performance of a permanent magnet.In July 2026, Nexon Geochem signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Giredmet to jointly develop deep-processing technologies for rare-earth metal raw materials and NdFeB rare-earth permanent magnets.Published on August 26, 2026
