The Victorian Labor government introduced a secret levy on public transport fares to pay for its $34 billion Suburban Rail Loop, which an auditor-general’s investigation has slammed as being unfunded and likely to blow out in cost and time.
The damning report released on Wednesday said the project had already experienced significant delays and was unlikely to meet the government’s estimated completion date of 2035, and that its final cost would probably exceed the government’s upper estimates of $34.5 billion.
