After 18 months on the job, Broward College President Torey Alston is out.
Alston and the Board of Trustees struck a mutual separation agreement at a special meeting Tuesday. In stepping down, Alston avoided being fired outright by the board, which had called a special meeting earlier this month whose sole agenda item was terminating his contract. That meeting was bumped after a judge ordered the two sides into mediation at Alston’s request. But his exit indicates the two sides were unable to find common ground on a path forward.
Alston and the board agreed on a $430,000 payout as part of his separation package. That figure is significantly lower than the $1.5 million Alston reportedly sought in recent negotiations. The settlement includes a mix of severance pay, unused sick and vacation leave, and a payment of $268,768 to withdraw a threatened lawsuit, according to the agreement.
Alston is now the second president to leave Broward College in the last three years. Former President Gregory Haile, who had led the institution since 2018, stepped down abruptly in 2023 with little explanation. His departure also came amid tensions with the Board of Trustees.
