The unnamed man from Sussex, aged in his 40s, died despite the best efforts of paramedics after he was pulled from the waters off a Devon beach earlier this week17:08, 25 Aug 2026‌A man has died after getting into difficulty in the sea off the Devon coast in another summer drowning incident.‌Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they were called by HM Coastguard at 3.30pm on Monday over concerns for the welfare in the coastal village of Strete. The service said the unnamed man, who in his 40s and from Surrey, was pulled from the water after members of the coastguard, police and paramedics rushed to the scene.‌A spokesperson said the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, and added that the death was not being treated as suspicious.Confirming the man's death, a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called by HM Coastguard at 3.30pm on Monday, August 24 following concerns for the welfare of a man at Blackpool Sands, Strete. The man had got into difficulty while swimming in the sea and was recovered from the water by HM Coastguard.‌"He was treated at the scene by paramedics. Sadly, the man, who was in his 40s from Surrey, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."The man is the 52nd person to die after getting into the water this summer, which has proven particularly deadly for people venturing into the water to cool off during severe hot weather. Three heatwaves have scorched the country since May, leading thousands of people to flock to the coast, rivers and other water sources in a desperate bid to escape sky-high temperatures nearing 40C.‌The man's death follows the devastating Shoreham drownings, during which four members of the same family died after getting into difficulty in waters off the coast of the West Sussex port town at around 2pm on August 18.Palestinians Saja El-Khawas, six, her sister Sara El-Khawas, 14, and her parents Hassan El-Khawas, 55, and Zeina Alayn, 37, died last week after entering the water at Kingston Beach, which is near Shoreham Port. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, who were called to the scene at around 2.40pm.Sara, Hassan and Zeina sadly died on the scene, while Saja died three days later after she was rushed to hospital. A spokesperson for Sussex Police said the deaths were being treated as a "tragic incident" without third-party involvement.‌Sussex Ch Supt James Collis said: "This heartbreaking update is one we all feared in the aftermath of Tuesday's tragic events. The impact of this tragedy has been felt across the country, and I know the Shoreham community, emergency responders and all involved will continue to be affected for a long time to come."I would like to thank all of the public who have shared their sympathies and kind words."
