Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Brazil's data protection authority fined TikTok owner ByteDance 153.7 million reais, or about $29.8 million, for unlawfully processing the personal data of children and adolescents and failing to adopt effective measures to protect them.
The penalty, published Tuesday in the country's official gazette, also requires the company to delete data collected improperly and implement a plan to strengthen protections for minors on the platform, the National Data Protection Authority said.
The investigation identified five violations of Brazil's General Data Protection Law involving two ways of accessing TikTok: content available to users who enter the platform without creating an account and content for registered users.
