Jailed govt. official found in hospital ward in Mandya during surprise inspection

An official of the State government’s Survey, Settlement, and Land Records Department, who had been arrested by the Lokayukta police and remanded in judicial custody, was found undergoing treatment at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), allegedly without a legitimate medical reason for hospitalisation.Mohammed Hussain, Assistant Director of Land Records, Srirangapatna — arrested for alleged forgery of government land records — was found in a separate ward of the hospital with a woman. The surprise inspection of MIMS on Monday was conducted by Mandya District and Sessions Judge C. Chandrashekar and Member Secretary of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority Shashidhar Shetty.Inquiries with hospital authorities revealed that Hussain reportedly had no illness requiring hospitalisation. The woman accompanying him claimed to be his girlfriend.The superintendent of Mandya jail, where Hussain had been sent for judicial custody, informed the officials that he had been admitted to MIMS since August 21, on the advice of the jail’s medical officer.When the judge further asked whether the matter had been brought to the court’s notice, the jail superintendent said the court would be informed shortly.The jail superintendent, the police official concerned, and the MIMS hospital superintendent have been asked to submit reports on the matter, as admitting an accused to hospital without obtaining the court’s permission constitutes a clear violation of the law. The presence of a woman in the accused’s room, officials noted, also amounts to prima facie violation. Further legal action will be taken once the reports are received.Hussain was arrested for allegedly assisting in the unauthorised digitisation of Akarband records on government software and the creation of fake government documents relating to the Revenue Department transactions.The Lokayukta police had unearthed the forgery racket at the office of the Assistant Director of Land Records, Srirangapatna, on July 2, 2026, and had arrested about nine persons.
