To position Tamil Nadu at the forefront of the growing AI economy, the new TVK-led government of Tamil Nadu has announced a reorganisation of the Tamil Nadu Artificial Intelligence Mission (TNAIM).Under the new changes, the TNAIM will be renewed and incorporated as a Section 8 not-for-profit company while a new government company called the Tamil Nadu AI Vision (TNAIV) will function as the commercial arm of the mission, according to the government’s 2026-27 policy note for the Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology and Digital Services Department.The company is being set up to commercialise the state’s AI infrastructure and investments including operating state-owned AI compute infrastructure, lease/concession AI-related land or infrastructure to private companies, take equity stakes in project companies involved in AI and commercially operate other revenue-generating AI assets.The government has also announced plans to expand the TN AI Mission to integrate other next-gen sectors like Quantum Technology, Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR); deep tech and other emerging technologies.The announcements also included the setting up of sector-specific AI Centres of Excellence (CoE) across five categories, including Healthcare, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Tamil Language, and Climate.The policy document has also proposed that the Department for Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology and Digital Services will serve as the ultimate mandate for the implementation of all AI and related projects for any governmental department, including the Directorate of E-Governance, Tamil Nadu, E-Governance Agency (TNeGA), Electronics Corporation Of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT).The policy note also stated that the Data Centre Policy, first released in 2021, will be revamped, addressing AI data-centre energy and environmental requirements and growing AI-compute needs.Moreover, the government also plans to undertake a feasibility study for a quantum communication corridor with academic and industrial collaboration for technologies like quantum communication, quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum networks, and post-quantum security, as well as a Tamil Nadu Innovation Exchange (TNiX) to connect MSMEs and industries with start-ups.Published on August 25, 2026
