The Forest Department has launched a major palmyra seed collection and plantation drive as part of the government’s Great Green Wall of Andhra Pradesh initiative to create a natural protective barrier along the State’s coastline.Deputy Chief Minister and Forests and Environment Minister K. Pawan Kalyan said on Tuesday that the government proposed to establish palmyra groves on 5,499 hectares, with a target of planting nearly 55 lakh palmyra seeds. Three-tier planUnder the three-tier plan, mangrove forests will constitute the first tier, while palmyra groves will form the second tier and act as a natural windbreak against cyclones and extreme weather events. A third layer is envisaged as part of the broader coastal green cover strategy.The Forest Department has collected 13 lakh seeds during the current fruiting season with the participation of rural communities and government agencies. Around 1.65 lakh seeds have been planted with support from the Panchayat Raj and Revenue departments, school students, and local communities, he said.Mr. Pawan Kalyan said palmyra was particularly suited to coastal conditions because it could withstand salinity, strong winds and sandy and alluvial soils. Its deep root system helps bind soil and check coastal erosion, while the tall trees can provide a natural barrier against strong winds. The groves would also support coastal biodiversity by providing habitats for birds and reptiles, he said.He appealed to communities, educational institutions, government and private organisations, and voluntary groups to participate in the plantation drive and protect young plants from cattle and other threats.The Minister said the Great Green Wall was part of the government’s broader objective of achieving 50 per cent green cover in the State, restoring degraded ecosystems and conserving natural resources.He urged people to participate in the environmental conservation drive to strengthen natural protection along the coast and secure a healthier environment for future generations.
