In the Durban Magistrate's Court, a Durban businessman and co-accused face serious human trafficking charges as the state opposes bail, citing witness interference and public outrage over the allegations.
The state said that the prominent Durban businessman and his co-accused, Rangasamy Naidoo, who are facing human trafficking charges should not be granted bail because they would interfere with witnesses.
The matter is being heard in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The defence attorneys have submitted their affidavits motivating why their clients should be given bail.
The case stems from a 2022 incident involving three young women from Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, who were lured with a fake SIM card job opportunity and were later forced into sexual exploitation at a Durban North property.
Naidoo, 48, is facing charges of human trafficking, kidnapping, cybercrime, crimen injuria, and procurement for prostitution. The businessman faces a total of 20 charges, including sexual assault. He cannot be named until he pleads.
