A fire that broke out at the Vellalore dump yard in Coimbatore around 5 a.m. on Sunday (August 23, 2026) was brought under control by Monday (August 24, 2026). The fire had spread across about 3.1 acres on the eastern side of the site, behind the compost yard, where garden waste and water hyacinth waste had accumulated.The blaze was noticed by patrolling staff from the watchtower, following which firefighting operations were launched. Ten fire tenders were deployed to contain the blaze. Water was pumped from a lagoon within the dump yard premises and used to douse the fire. The police also deployed the Varun water cannon vehicle.A 20-member medical team from the Corporation’s public health wing inspected the surrounding areas and found no cases of respiratory problems among residents.Officials suspect that the fire could have been triggered by the difference in temperature and the heat conditions prevailing over the past week. The exact cause, however, is yet to be ascertained.Firefighting operations continued through the night, with additional vehicles and personnel deployed to contain the blaze.
