SAN FRANCISCO — The home clubhouse at 24 Willie Mays Plaza Monday night looked like the waiting room at Park City Hospital during ski season. The San Francisco Giants began the day with 14 players on the Injured List. By the time the first pitch was thrown, they’d added three more: infielder Willy Adames (left elbow sprain), outfielder Victor Bericoto (right knee bone bruise) and right-hander JT Brubaker (bruised ribs). Then came the third inning, a sudden twinge of pain in Carson Whisenhunt’s left elbow and an escort to the trainer’s room. The left-hander will wrestle with an apprehensive mind for every waking moment until he goes for an MRI exam Tuesday morning. The subtractions keep coming. With Bryce Eldridge also placed on the bereavement list to attend funeral services for his grandfather and left-hander Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson optioned, the Giants made a flurry of pregame roster moves that better resembled a blizzard: five new arrivals with no place to house all of them. Space is at such a premium that, at the risk of mixing up their car keys, injured relievers José Buttó and Joel Peguero are now sharing a stall. The Giants lineup was so depleted in Monday’s homestand opener against the Cincinnati Reds that Turner Hill, an undrafted free agent who wasn’t invited to spring training and made his major-league debut nine days earlier, served as their cleanup hitter. Drew Cavanaugh, Nate Furman, Shay Whitcomb, Grant McCray and Christian Koss followed him in the lineup. If it wasn’t for Rafael Devers and Jung Hoo Lee, it would’ve been appropriate for the team to wear alternate “They Might Be Giants” themed uniforms. Everyone’s walkup music could’ve been “The Replacements.” And the entire team took the field on fumes after jetting across the country and landing early Monday morning following a three-game drubbing in Boston over the weekend.Yet somehow, even while facing Reds ace Chase Burns, the Giants made it to a handshake line and a 5-0 victory. Devers hit a three-run home run in the second inning, Drew Gilbert hit a pair of rally-sparking doubles, and five Giants relievers carried on the momentum that Whisenhunt appeared to be building before his elbow lit up.
