A hot potato: Sony's announcement that physical disc production for PlayStation games will end in January 2028 has launched an industry-wide conversation about whether customers truly own the games they pay for. Although the backlash has hardly died down weeks later, recent emails from Sony remind users that the answer is no.
The company began emailing copies of the PlayStation Terms of Service and other legal documents earlier this month. Notably, the messages contain a section from the PlayStation End User License Agreement stating that software on the platform is licensed, not sold.
That most digital storefronts license content without actually selling it is nothing new, but Sony's emails seem poorly timed. They are likely routine notifications following recent PlayStation Store purchases, but have taken on new meaning as the backlash to Sony's plans to sunset optical media remains strong.
