In a major boost to the power grid, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) reported the registration of 124 renewable energy generation facilities during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, bringing R20.18 billion in investment and adding 804MW of power.
Over 70% of that new power came from just two massive wind projects, proving that large-scale wind farms are becoming a major fix for the country's power supply.
A prime example of this in practice is the 330MW Impofu Wind cluster in the Eastern Cape's Kouga region.
Completed in June 2026 after a decade of planning by Red Cap Energy, the wind project, now owned and operated by Enel Green Power South Africa, uses a newly-built 116km transmission line to bypass local grid limits and wheel power directly to Sasol’s Secunda facility via Gqeberha. Roughly 90km east of Humansdorp and the Impofu Wind Farm cluster.
