All it takes is placing a simple item on your windowsills and near doors to tackle the problem, and it will help to prevent spiders invading your property.‌The clever hack was shared online to help homeowners keep bugs out of their properties, and it couldn't be simpler to put into practice. What's more is that it doesn't just deter spiders, as flies, moths and other creepy crawlies could also be put off visiting if you use the simple method.‌There are other simple tricks you can use too. In fact, there are four other ways you can try and keep the insects away.‌A video was shared on TikTok by Jeff and Lauren, who flagged a rather handy household hack. In the clip, they demonstrated exactly what they place on their windowsills.Alongside the footage, they wrote: "Natural pest control! Strong scented [spices] like cinnamon, star anise and cloves help repel spiders and other bugs! Place at entry points to help to deter them!"How it worksYou might not be aware that both cloves and clove oil are effective at repelling flies and spiders. Their powerful scent and active chemical compounds work together to keep the pests well away.‌Cloves contain a chemical called eugenol, which has a potent aroma that flies don't like at all. Meanwhile, spiders taste and smell through specialised sensory organs and tiny hairs (setae) on their legs. The powerful aroma of clove oil overwhelms and interferes with these receptors, causing spiders to steer clear of the scent.Content cannot be displayed without consent‌It's also been reported that other insects are equally put off by cloves. Ants, mosquitoes and moths are among the bugs that dislike the spice and tend to give it a wide berth. It's worth noting that cloves work as a natural repellent rather than a permanent solution or a means of extermination. That said, with regular reapplication as the scent diminishes, it should help to keep certain bugs at bay.How to do itYou can keep spiders out by making a DIY spray with clove essential oil or by placing whole or ground cloves near entry points like on windowsills and near doors. To make a spray, simply mix 10 to 15 drops of clove essential oil, a few drops of dish soap (as a dispersing agent) and one cup to a quart of water in a spray bottle.‌Before use, give the bottle a thorough shake each time to ensure the oil combines properly with the water. Then, simply spritz the solution along windowsills, door frames, baseboards, dark corners and anywhere you spot cobwebs.Reapply every few days or weekly during peak seasons. Some people use the spray to deter flies too. When it comes to keeping flies away, however, others press 15 to 20 cloves into a freshly cut lemon or a ripe apple, placing the fruit on windowsills, kitchen counters or outdoor tables.Article continues belowThe potent combination of spice and citrus creates a fragrant barrier that repels flies — another handy trick well worth trying.
