After taking some well-deserved time off following his breakthrough victory at the Comrades Marathon in June, George Kusche returned to competitive action at the Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10k over the weekend. Kusche finished in 13th, which was impressive considering the impressive field assembled for the race.

"I think it went well—a good first effort back after Comrades,” Kusche said in an exclusive interview with IOL following Sunday's race. “I expected to run around 29:50 to 30:00 and finished in roughly 30:08, so it’s right within expectations. It was a tough race, but I’m happy with the effort.”

Though he triumphed at the gruelling "Ultimate Human Race" in June, Kusche’s deep track background makes him a threat at any distance on the South African road running circuit.

The middle-distance specialist, who celebrated his 28th birthday earlier this month, boasts a 5,000m personal best of 13:28 alongside a 10km record of 28:56—set two years ago in Gqeberha—a mark he looks fully capable of eclipsing in the near future.
