As infielders Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa inch closer to returning to the Boston Red Sox, the team will have tough roster decisions to make as soon as this week.Those decisions will be especially tough as role players called up to replace Story and Kiner-Falefa continue to impact the game as they did Monday night in Miami. Mickey Gasper tied the score with an RBI double in the fifth, Anthony Seigler’s RBI triple in the ninth gave the Red Sox their first lead, and Nick Sogard made it a 4-2 game with an RBI single of his own in another come-from-behind victory as the Red Sox topped the Marlins.And yet, the Red Sox still plan to find room on the roster for their rehabbing players.Story and Kiner-Falefa began rehab assignments last week with Triple-A Worcester and were reevaluated Monday. The Red Sox decided both will remain for at least one more game Tuesday with Worcester, though Story could join the team in Miami as soon as Wednesday. Meanwhile, it had already been determined that outfielder Roman Anthony, who began a rehab assignment last week with Double-A Portland, will continue his rehab with Worcester this week and is a few games behind his more veteran teammates.The Red Sox will need to open three roster spots within the next week or so at a point the club is rolling with the Triple-A call-ups who’ve gotten them this far.A rotating cast of Seigler, Gasper, Sogard and Andruw Monasterio (who has been with the club since Opening Day but seen increased playing time) has not only helped sustain the club, but also helped it thrive since Story, Kiner-Falefa and Anthony went down in the span of six weeks in May and June.The Red Sox will have to toe the line of reincorporating the injured players into the lineup while optioning some players who have been key pieces to their run.Why the Red Sox resurgence is historicKen Rosenthal and Johnny SweetSo what are the options? Let’s start in the infield.Against the Marlins in Monday’s series opener, interim manager Chad Tracy switched up his alignment a bit with Seigler at second and Sogard at short. Sogard has been on fire in 24 games since he was recalled in late July, starting all but one game in that span (mostly at second) and hitting .293 with an .846 OPS, including his first two big-league homers last homestand. While Sogard has seen much of his playing time at second, starting 11 of the past 12 games at the spot, Tracy has more or less said he wants Sogard’s bat in the lineup every day. Optioning Sogard seems less and less likely as he remains hot.“You can’t say enough about it,” Tracy said of Sogard’s performance. “You’re getting power swings on the left side, powerful swings on the right side. You’re getting great defense. It’s been enormous, the at-bats he’s taken.”That likely means Seigler is the odd man out, despite his huge hit Monday. Seigler was a spark plug when he was first recalled in late June to replace Kiner-Falefa, hitting .254 with a .740 OPS in 45 games, but his playing time has taken a hit since Sogard’s call-up. Seigler’s start Monday was his first in eight days, yet he still managed to contribute with the game on the line.If Seigler is optioned when Story or Kiner-Falefa returns, Monasterio could be the other player optioned.Though Monasterio’s defense has been subpar, his offense has remained consistent throughout the season (.254 with a .727 OPS in 90 games). He has started 29 of the last 31 games at shortstop with Sogard getting the other two starts.But just last week, Tracy vowed to find playing time for Monasterio.“I don’t think he’ll still play. He’ll still play,” Tracy said definitively. “You’re at that point where you’ve got to kind of play the hot hand and then find ways to mix and match whatever else you have to keep people involved. But Mona has played exceptionally well for two months.”Rosters expand Sept. 1, but only by two spots, to 28 players, and one of those is likely to be an extra pitcher. It’s possible the club sends Monasterio down this week and recalls him next week with an the extra spot.Either way, the Red Sox may lose offensive production as Story and Kiner-Falefa ease back into play. Story has gone 4-for-21 with no walks and no extra-base hits in six rehab games (five at shortstop and one at designated hitter). Kiner-Falefa is 1-for-13 in four games, two at shortstop and two at second base.Then there’s Anthony.A decision on his return seems less imminent than with Story and Kiner-Falefa, but he’ll be returning soon regardless.The 22-year-old moved on from Double-A Portland, where he went 3-for-11 in four games in last week’s series, including a mammoth homer in his first game. He’s played two games in left and two at DH.The plan remains for Anthony to continue splitting time between left field and designated hitter when he returns to the Red Sox, as he did at the start of the season. But that will once again create an outfield logjam.Neither Jahmai Jones nor Eli White has options left in their contracts and would have to be designated for assignment. White, acquired for pitcher Tyler Uberstine at the deadline, is under control through 2028 and has elite speed and strong defense, making it very likely he remains on the roster.Jones has mashed lefties, similar to how Romy Gonzalez and Rob Refsnyder have in recent years, since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers. He’s hit .520 with a 1.586 OPS in 17 games with the Red Sox, splitting time between left field and DH.The most likely optionable is Gasper, who has filled in admirably at DH since Masataka Yoshida landed on the injured list. The 30-year-old hit homers in three straight games last week and is batting .421 with a 1.613 OPS in seven games since getting recalled.There have been questions floating around about Jarren Duran’s status on the club, and although he’s struggled this season, he’s posted an .828 OPS in August and remains under control for two more seasons. It’d be hard to see the Red Sox moving on from Duran, even though White has gotten recent starts in left field against lefties over him.Tracy will likely work to give some days off down the stretch to Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela with Duran, White, Jones and soon Anthony in the mix.There will be no easy decisions in the coming days with Seigler, Gasper and Sogard playing so well. It will be one more test for Tracy, who’s navigated the roster so well all season.
