Chloe Dixon was thousands of kilometres from home, enjoying the final carefree days of her summer holiday, when doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children told her the lump inside her mouth was cancer.
Treating the rare soft-tissue sarcoma infiltrating her cheek would require multiple surgeries, possible radiation and 18 months of gruelling chemotherapy. It was hard for Chloe, then 11, to hear she needed to stay in Toronto for treatment, far from her friends, family and dog, a loyal Norwegian elkhound named Bjorn, back in the Northwest Territories.
