Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) criticized President Donald Trump’s trade actions against Canada, warning that the tariffs could increase costs for American families and manufacturers while urging Republicans to challenge the policy.
Schumer Warns Canada Tariffs Could Raise Costs On Monday, in a post on X, Schumer described Trump’s approach toward Canada as "economic warfare against one of our closest allies." He warned that the trade measures could hurt families and manufacturers in New York, Ohio, Michigan, Maine and other states with close economic ties to Canada.
Schumer then challenged Republican lawmakers from those states to oppose the tariffs.
"Will the Republicans from those states join us to stop this insanity?" he asked.
He added, "Or will their loyalty to Donald Trump and his personal grievances outweigh their willingness to bring down costs for the people who elected them?" Economic warfare against one of our closest allies that will hurt families and American manufacturers in New York, Ohio, Michigan, Maine, and so many other states.
