House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) defended his private meeting with Jared Kushner on Monday, saying he agreed to discuss the affordability crisis while vowing Democrats would "hold every single member of the Trump cartel accountable" if they win the House in November.
Jeffries Defends Meeting Amid Democratic Backlash
"He asked for a meeting, and I took it to discuss the affordability crisis that exists," Jeffries said in a video posted on X. AP reported over the weekend that the Kushner-Jeffries meeting covered housing, immigration and the cost of living, and that Kushner suggested Jeffries meet White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles.
Jeffries pushed back against criticism that speaking with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law signaled a softer approach toward the administration.
"I shouldn’t have to say it, but I am. No one is going to get a pass," Jeffries said. "We’re gonna follow the facts, apply the law, and be guided by the Constitution beginning on day one. And hold the crooks accountable."
