After landing Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade over the summer, the front office kept working, and the arrival of Klay Thompson has changed the conversation in the Eastern Conference completely. The Philadelphia Sixers spent the summer building a superteam of their own around LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, and most of the offseason chatter crowned the Sixers as the team to beat. Now, at least one respected voice in NBA media thinks Miami has already caught up, and maybe passed them. Why the Miami Heat threaten LeBron James' championship hopesFormer All-Star guard Jeff Teague isn't buying the hype around Philadelphia. Appearing on the Club 520 podcast, he laid out exactly why he trusts Miami's roster over the 76ers, name-checking the depth Erik Spoelstra now has to work with."We got Bam, Giannis, Klay, Wiggs, Mitchell, THJ off the pine, Portis off the pine," Teague said. He further told listeners he'd called the Heat over the Sixers before Thompson even signed. The Sixers are still figuring out how James, Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe share the ball, and usage rates have been a real sticking point through camp.On the other hand, the Miami Heat added proven shooter Thompson. Teague went further, floating that a Jrue Holiday buyout landing in Miami would settle the argument entirely, calling the Heat the best team in the East and putting them right alongside the defending champion New York Knicks.Miami Heat build a golden trio with Klay Thompson, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam AdebayoThompson signed a two-year contract worth approximately $11.5 million with Miami after clearing waivers from the Dallas Mavericks, and the fit is obvious on paper. The Heat spent last season searching for reliable three-point shooting to space the floor around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo, and Thompson, even at this stage of his career, is a high-volume threat from deep. There's a defensive angle too. Andrew Wiggins now draws the assignment of guarding Jaylen Brown, which neutralizes one of the matchup edges Philadelphia looked to have. Thompson has barely practiced with his new team, yet his signing is already the reason Teague ranks Miami above a Sixers roster loaded with star power.Miami Heat could still add more talent before the season startsMiami isn't done shopping. According to ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel, the Heat still have room to sign a couple more players and have looked at names like Nick Richards, Keshad Johnson, Gabe Vincent, Jonathan Kuminga and Bruce Brown.Richards would add rebounding behind Adebayo, while Johnson, already with the team on a two-way deal, could stick around for his locker room value. Vincent, a favorite of Spoelstra's from Miami's 2023 Finals run, would bring backcourt experience after a rough stint with the Lakers. Kuminga joining feels unlikely given his contract demands, but Brown, a former Miami college player, could be a realistic reunion on a minimum deal late in free agency.
