• Awards $1.2m in five years to preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage

The United States has awarded a $125,000 grant to Centre for Memories in Enugu to support the preservation and digital documentation of the historic Lejja Iron-Smelting Site in Enugu State, believed to date back to about 2000 BC.
The grant, provided under the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), will support the physical conservation of the site, alongside 3D digital documentation aimed at preserving its history and making the heritage site more accessible for future generations.
The project, titled, “Nchekwaba: Lejja Iron-Smelting,” is expected to provide further insight into the technological advancement and ingenuity of communities in what is now South-east Nigeria thousands of years ago.
