Ukrainian law enforcement authorities have charged Russian Army General and Chief of the General Staff – First Deputy Defense Minister Valery Gerasimov with war crimes resulting in deaths.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the Prosecutor General’s Office reported this, according to Ukrinform.

According to military counterintelligence investigators, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the official has issued combat orders to carry out combined missile and air strikes against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

Investigators established that Gerasimov personally commanded the largest-scale attack on Kyiv overnight on July 2, 2026. Russian forces used a total of 570 weapons against the Ukrainian capital, including attack drones as well as hypersonic and ballistic missiles, including Zircon and Iskander-M missiles.

“More than 100 people were injured in the attack, 70 of whom were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity,” the SSU said.
