Most Taylor Swift fans probably do not think of the sad events of “All Too Well” and the ultimately happy “Toy Story 5” as occurring in the same cinematic or musical universe. But, to the contrary, Swift sees a clear thematic connection between her epic romantic tragedy of 14 years ago and the happily-ever-after saga of Jessie in this year’s Pixar film, with some choice “Folklore” from the years in-between as connective tissue — namely, “I Knew It, I Knew You,” “August” and “All Too Well.”
The mashup of the three numbers comes as a surprise at the climax of a newly released video of a recent program at the Grammy Museum, which was released online Monday on the Recording Academy‘s YouTube channel. The fewer than 200 attendees at last week’s semi-secret session in the museum’s intimate Clive Davis Theater had done a good job of helping keep the nature of the performance under wraps until now.
Swift introduced the six-minute solo piano performance following a 42-minute interview with Recording Academy chief Harvey Mason Jr. Speaking directly to the audience, she explained that what they were about to hear would be an echo of the surprise medleys she performed on her record-breaking stadium tour that wrapped up in December 2024.
