Right now, the Washington Nationals have a problem when it comes to their major league infield.CJ Abrams, who was the team's starting shortstop at the start of the year and throughout his tenure in the nation's capital, is being moved to second base because of his poor defense. Nasim Nunez, who is considered to be an elite defender, provides almost next to nothing on offense.Third baseman Brady House and first baseman Abimelec Ortiz would be franchise cornerstones at their respective positions in an ideal world, but both have either gone through growing pains or are currently experiencing them.And then there's the reserves. While Andres Chaparro has been sensational in the second half of the season, that is a small sample size. Jorbit Vivas and Jose Tena have been below average throughout the year, and both have hurt the team at times.Thankfully, it looks like there is a brighter future ahead, as the Nationals were deemed to have one of the best crops of infield prospects across Major League Baseball.Nationals Group of Infield Prospects Ranked No. 3Washington Nationals prospect Eli Willits | USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectJim Callis of MLB Pipeline ranked Washington's infield group at No. 3, and a lot of that has to do with who they have on the lower levels of their minor league system.Led by 2025 No. 1 overall pick Eli Willits who is now considered a top-five prospect in the sport, the Nationals appear to have a true five-tool player on their hands. Both Devin Fitz-Gerald and Ronny Cruz lit it up during the first part of the season, and they appear to have high ceilings, as well. 2026 first-round pick Chris Hacopian was considered to have the best hit tool by many evaluators in this class. And then there's Seaver King, who has been sensational this year and is pushing for his MLB debut at some point to close out this season.Many of those players began their careers as shortstops, so some maneuvering is going to take place since Willits looks like the future at that position for Washington. Fitz-Gerald has slid over to second base while Cruz has gotten work at the hot corner, and King has just started to play third base after he's been a shortstop and second baseman throughout his minor league career.Overall, this is a group to get excited about.
