GREEN BAY, Wis. – Late in Monday’s practice at Green Bay Packers training camp, with the defense beating up on the offense play after play, Matthew Golden caught a pass and was tackled by Barryn Sorrell.A fight – that word used a bit loosely – ensued. Lukas Van Ness and Aaron Banks got involved, and Zaire Franklin added a little fuel to the fire.“We’re just being competitive, man, going out there and playing football,” Sorrell said. “Things happen. Emotions get high. Got into it a little bit. That’s my boy. I’m his boy. We’re still cool. It’s football.”The former Texas teammates – the Packers drafted both players last year – had made up by the end of practice.“You know how it is when you’ve got a brother-type thing,” Sorrell said. “Me and Matt are always getting into it. It’s just how our relationship is. Today it got out on the football a little bit and everybody thought we were so serious. The whole time we were joking around a little bit. Like I said, it’s football. It’s how it gets. It’s fun.”Throughout Monday’s practice, the defense took the fight to the offense. And that’s where we’ll dive into our daily training camp report.Which Unit Won the Day?The defense has been the top unit throughout most of training camp. Monday’s practice, the 15th of training camp, was no different – other than the level of domination.Jonathan Gannon’s unit made life a living hell for the offense. From the first play to the last, from the starters to the backups, from runs to passes, the defense kept swinging and the offense kept getting clobbered.Late in practice, with the pocket collapsing, Jordan Love threw a no-look pass in the general vicinity of his checkdown player in the flat. Maybe Love was trying to make a play. Or, maybe it was the frustration of the moment. The defense produced three takeaways. First, during a 2-minute drill, Love had nowhere to go on fourth-and-10 and was intercepted by Keisean Nixon. Next, a handoff to MarShawn Lloyd turned into a fumble, which was recovered by Barryn Sorrell. Finally, Kyle McCord was intercepted by Kitan Oladapo.“Every time we go out there, we (play) aggressive defense,” Sorrell said. “We’re trying to compete. It starts with our play style. We try to have a really good motor out there and we try to play violently. Obviously, whoever’s across from us might not like that and whatever happens, happens after that. At the end of the day, we’re going to go out there and we’re going to play our brand of football.”Packers Training Camp Injury ReportNew injuries: CB Benjamin St-Juste (hamstring), Arron Mosby (illness).PUP: Edge Micah Parsons (knee), LS Matt Orzech (calf), TE Luke Musgrave (neck), DT Jordon Riley (Achilles).Old injuries: S Javon Bullard (foot), edge Collin Oliver (calf), WR Savion Williams (ankle), TE Thomas Yassmin (knee), DT Warren Brinson (calf).Returned to practice: CB Brandon Cisse (knee), WR Jayden Reed (personal), T/G Darian Kinnard (ankle), WR J. Michael Sturdivant (concussion protocol).Brinson was injured during pregame warmups at Denver and didn’t play.“He felt a little tweak in his calf, so he’ll miss a little bit of time,” coach Matt LaFleur said amid several updates before practice.Sturdivant, an undrafted free agent who is challenging for a roster spot, suffered a head injury on his one catch at Denver but was back doing individual drills on Monday.Play and Player of the DayThe daily Play and Player of the Day segment from Packers training camp had to go three deep on Players of the Day because the No. 1 defense was so dominant. ⬇️https://t.co/dLgwDftkjS— Bill Huber (@BillHuberNFL) August 24, 2026Training Camp Lineup Notes– The first-team offensive line will get this week and next to get rolling. Left tackle Jordan Morgan, left guard Aaron Banks, center Sean Rhyan, right guard Jacob Monk and right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele took almost all the No. 1 reps together.– With Benjamin St-Juste out, the No. 1 corners throughout the day were Brandon Cisse and Keisean Nixon. The No. 1 defensive tackles for the start of practice were Devonte Wyatt, Jonathan Ford and Karl Brooks. At this point, Ford – a seventh-round pick in 2022 who didn’t play a single snap in his first two-and-a-half seasons with the team – looks like he’ll start.– As advertised, rookie Jager Burton took some second-team snaps at center. At this point, he seems poised to be the universal interior backup.– With Javon Bullard out, Kamal Hadden took most of the first-team reps in the slot but Kitan Oladapo got plenty of action, too.Hadden played 21 snaps against Denver, his first action since last year’s season-ending ankle injury against Baltimore.“I was really emotional before the game,” he said. “I know why but I don't know why. I didn't expect it but, man, I was just happy to be out there. I was just happy to go and do what I can and actually put some good stuff on tape and see where it takes me and help my team. And that's all I could do, and that's all I really was focused on. But I was really excited to be out there.”Big Plays from Training Camp– The first play of the day was the perfect summation for everything that happened afterward. Back in the lineup, Josh Jacobs took a run to the left and was greeted at the point of attack by cornerback Brandon Cisse. Cisse made the stop at the line of scrimmage and the defense celebrated.– On the next play, Sean Rhyan and Jordan Love botched the snap. After Love hit Tucker Kraft, Lukas Van Ness blew up a run by Jacobs, Cisse limited a pass into the flat for no gain, Chris McClellan stuffed Chris Brooks and Edgerrin Cooper limited a checkdown to Jayden Reed for a minimal gain (or no gain at all).– With the No. 2s in the game, linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper sliced into the backfield to stop running back Damien Martinez.– A few plays later, Tyrod Taylor went deep to Isaiah Neyor but the pass was broken up by Carrington Valentine.– With the No. 3s, Martinez got into the open field on a run behind right tackle Brant Banks and right guard Josh Gesky.– Jacobs had a few explosive runs, a combination of good blocking and fresh legs as he motored up the middle and into the secondary.– The next two plays were a pass from Love to Tucker Kraft that was broken up by Edgerrin Cooper and a big-play completion from Love to Matthew Golden that might have been a sack because Lukas Van Ness ducked under Jordan Morgan.Matthew Golden, going deep. pic.twitter.com/QoJiKiuA3k— Bill Huber (@BillHuberNFL) August 24, 2026– On the next play, MarShawn Lloyd tried to dance his way around Jonathan Ford but Ford wasn’t falling for any of it and had a TFL. Then, Love went deep up the right sideline to Jayden Reed but had his pass broken up by Keisean Nixon. One play later, Lloyd got the ball on a misdirection run that rookie defensive tackle Chris McClellan ruined.– Death, taxes and Anthony Campbell rushing the passer, but a scrambling Taylor probably found an alley to convert a third-and-4.– Love and the starters got one 2-minute drill. After a solid run by Jacobs, Love went over the middle to Jayden Reed for a gain of 17 to the defense’s 47. After Van Ness beat Morgan again to force a throwaway, Love missed a wide-open Golden on and out and then threw a poor checkdown to Skyy Moore. On fourth-and-10, Love didn’t have anywhere to throw the ball as he escaped the pocket and threw one up that was intercepted by Keisean Nixon.– On Taylor’s 2-minute drill, he converted a third-and-5 to Kisean Johnson, but Valentine broke up a third-and-3 to set up a 60-yard field-goal attempt by Trey Smack.– Smack made the 60-yard field goal. A field-goal period followed, with Smack hitting from 33, missing wide left from 40 and connecting from 43 to finish a 3-for-4 day.“I thought I hit the ball well, judged the wind right – I guessed right on it,” Smack said of the long one. “We were messing around with that out there today and it was moving a little bit from right to left. Kicked the ball well and it goes in.”– Up next was The Barryn Sorrell Show. First, it was a run to the right, with Cooper setting an edge and Sorrell stopping it from the back side. One play later, Love hit Christian Watson despite a good rush by Sorrell against Zach Bako-Bewele. On the next play, there was too much traffic to figure out exactly what happened but Sorrell emerged with the ball on what appeared to be a handoff to Lloyd. A handful of play later, on third-and-5, Sorrell rushed up the middle and Love threw incomplete; it looked like Sorrell gave Love the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag.– A bullet from Love up the seam to tight end Josh Whyle should have been a big play, but he heard footsteps and dropped the ball.– In a span of three plays, Keisean Nixon prevented a pair of deep completions from Love to Golden. The first came on third-and-15.– With the No. 3s, linebacker Nick Niemann and cornerback Domani Jackson combined to limit Jaden Nixon to a minimal gain. Next, Nyjalik Kelly’s pressure forced Kyle McCord to throw it away. That set up third-and-8, with Kitan Oladapo making a leaping interception.“Just dropped to the curl-flat and Kyle was looking right at me. I don’t know why he actually threw it,” Oladapo said.– Jacobs had a big run around the right side as Bako-Bewele had a tremendous block on Sorrell.– On third-and-2, Cooper almost intercepted Love’s pass to Kraft. Love to Kraft converted fourth-and-2, but Cooper wouldn’t let Lloyd bounce around the corner and Zaire Franklin stuffed Lloyd. On his final pass of the day, Love – perhaps showing some frustration – threw it away as the pocket collapsed.– In the final sequence of the day, Taylor completed passes to Will Sheppard, despite a big hit by Trey Dean III, and Johnson, then alluded hard-charging Jaden Crumedy for a 6-yard run to the 3. On third-and-goal from the 1, Jonathan Ford and Kristian Welch stuffed Jaden Nixon. On fourth-and-1, Taylor went to tight end Messiah Swinson in the flat, but he couldn’t make a one-handed catch against Welch.Packers Training Camp ScheduleBring your bike to Lambeau on Wednesday for a chance to ride to practice with a Packers or Cardinals player!— Green Bay Packers (@packers) August 25, 2026Incredibly, training camp has almost hit the finish line. The team will hold a light, closed practice on Tuesday. The final practice of camp is Wednesday’s joint practice against the Cardinals. The team moved the start of practice from the usual 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.The Last WordDuring the fracas mentioned at the start of the story, receiver Jayden Reed and cornerback Kamal Hadden pretended to mix it up. Here’s what Hadden had to say.“I mean, it's never good to have green-on-green crime or anything like that. But it's a high-energy game, and things can boil over a little bit, but it's nothing too major or nothing that I feel like the team should harp on. It happens, and we did what we did. Ultimately, it brings the best energy out, I feel like.“We all got a good practice in, and probably guys were hurting and things like that, but once that goes on, it's like everybody's in defense mode. So, it brings another level of intensity to the practice. So, I was just glad how we got to get back on track and got to doing our thing back in practice.”SIGN UP FOR OUR FREE DAILY PACKERS NEWSLETTERAdd us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
